On Thursday, September 5, at the 8th regular meeting of the Special Working group for implementation and monitoring of the National strategy on preventing and combating human trafficking, ASTRA presented its most recent publication – \u201eStudy on compatibility of the law of the Republic of Serbia with EU acquis communautaire in the area of combating trafficking in human beings\u201c.<\/p>\n

The basic goal of this study is to determine compatibility of the relevant legislation of the Republic of Serbia with the EU acquis in the area of fight against human trafficking. Serbia\u2019s obligation to harmonize relevant national legislation with the EU acquis steems from the Stabilization and Association Agreement signed with the EU. The agreement, which entered into force on September 1, 2013, also envisaged the obligation to develop projects of general interest, especially the ones pertaining to combating organized crime, including trafficking in human beings.<\/p>\n

On this occasion, the author of the Study on compatibility, Ms Violeta Be\u0161irevi\u0107, presented the key research results, conclusions and recommendations to the participants at the event. People who atended this presentation included members of the Working group, representatives of governmental and non-governmental actors in the field of combating trafficking in human beings, as well as the relevant ministries, state institutions and international organizations.<\/p>\n

The launch of the study has already provided impetus for some new initiatives, as at the very meeting, Dr Jasmina Kiurski, deputy of the Public Prosecutor of the Republic of Serbia, proposed launching of a joint initiative that would translate the recommendations of this study into a concrete proposal to amend the criminal legislation of the Ministry of Justice.<\/p>\n

We hope that key conclusions of this compatibility study would create opportunities for more targeted awareness-raising actions aimed at all relevant actors, as well as the broader public, and would inspire other similar initiatives.<\/p>\n
